ALWAR'S VERSES IN PRAISE OF THIS LOARD
(Meaning)

      

PERIA TIRUMOZHI-6.2

In the previous decad, Alwar narrated his disgust in this worldly life. Next the Alwar thought God will surely relieve him from the miseries of the samsara, if he further describes in detail such miseries that he is undergoing.

1. O Lord residing at Tiruvinnagar, I bore calmly the spiteful comments of others. Induced by the five indriyas, I enjoyed wealth and sensural pleasures, till I got disgusted. I have given up love and hatred towards others. I have also got rid of lust and anger. Now I take refuge at Your lotus feet.

2. L Lord residing at Tiruvinnagar, I had forgotten You for long. I did not even feel sorry for forgetting You. So I was repeatedly caught up in the cycle of births and deaths. O Lord, who has Lakshmi on Your chest, I have come to You now feeling fit to worship Your holy feet.

3. O Lord residing at Tiruvinnagar, Lord of Vaikunta and all worlds, You are sweet as honey and with lot of love for me, reside in my heart. Having taken repeated births in the wombs of doe-eyed women, I now realise the uselessness of this body. I bow at Your tender feet.

4. O Lord residing at Tiruvinnagar, having realised that at the time of death, wives, children and other relatives cannot be of any help, I have forsaken them. I have cut off the miseries of this worldly life, arising out of the action of the five indriyas, with the sword of Gitopadesa given by You to Arjuna. I have now fallen at Your holy feet.

5. O Lord residing at Tiruvinnagar, seven kings, who ruled the world and who were wished long life by pretty damsels wearing fragrant flowers, over, flowing with honey, which was sucked by bees, have also died. I do not want this worldly life and I fall at Your lotus feet.

6. O Lord residing at Tiruvinnagar, with majestic shoulders, You fought with Chanura and others and vanquished them. Holding Your powerful bow, You destroyed Lanka, which had strong fortress and was surrounded by oceans on all sides. I will not obey my idriyas, which are leading me to evil ways. I fall at Your holy feet.

7. O Lord residing at Tiruvinnagar, my five indriyas are leading me to evil ways, which will result in my being consigned to hell. I am disgusted with them and have come to you. Kindly listen to my prayers, without getting annoyed.

8. O lord residing at Tiruvinnagar my accumulated sins are pestering me and trying to push me into hell. O lord of all devas, who relived the disease of moon, I have come to you for salvation.

9. O lord residing at Tiruvinnagar, you are always praised by Sridevi, Bhoomidevi and nityasuris.you willingly went as a messenger to Duryodhana and spoke charming words to him .you, praised by vedas, are always glowing brightly in my heart. I have come to you for refuge.

10. These hymns have been sung in praise of the lord residing at Tiruvinnagar, surrounded by groves, full of flowers laden with honey. They have been compased by kalian, chief of tirumangai nagar, having tall fortresses and fertile fields whose spear pierces the bodies of the enemies. Those who recite these hymns will surely reach srivaikunta, the abode of the lord and nityasuris.

PERIA TIRUMOZHI -6-3

Again submitting to lord the miseries of worldly life, Alwar takes refuge at his feet and makes it clear that only desire is to attain his lotus feet in Sri vaikuntam.

1.O lord of Tiruvinnagar, I will not miss the supreme pleasure of enjoying you. I can never forget Your enchanting beauty. I do not therefore desire rebirth in this world and I am confident that I will get rid of this samsara.

2. O lord of Tiruvinnagar, you are the embodiment of virtues. I have overcome desire and anger. I have cut off attachment to relatives am now fit for doing service at your holy feet. I have firmly kept you in my heart.

3. O Lord of Tiruvinnagar, surrounded by rivers, Lord of all, You shine with glory in Tirukkurungudi and are sweet like honey in Tirunaraiyur.Itake refuge in You, being terrified of the arrow - like looks of doe-eyed women, with moon-like faces.

4. O Lord of Tiruvinnagar, I wasted my life in the company of alluring women, that would have led me to hell. Now I have realised my mistake and come to You and have god rid of all my sins.

5. O Lord of Tiruvinnagar, my Lord, who killed Ravana in Lanka surrounded by oceans, will not even think of any other God except You.I am fortunate in imprisoning You in my heart and as a result, I have god rid of repeated births in this world.

6.O Lord of Tiruvinnagar, You are present in the dark ocean, the earth, lofty mountains, the sun and the moon. Having thus realised your omnipresence, I will not think of any other god.

7.O Lord of Tiruvinnagar, I wish to submit something in short. You should shower your mercy on me. I will not accept any other god as having any virtues. I will not even think that any other god exists, except You.

8.O Lord of Tiruvinnagar, like the big trees that are destroyed by elephants in the desert, people die of their evil deeds. Without thinking of these, I am concentrating my mind only on You. Please tell me definitely when I will get rid of this samsara and reach You inVaikunta.

9.O Lord of Tiruvinnagar, You hold Lakshmi on your chest. You freely mixed with cowherds as Krishna, slayed the demon Madhu and are shining with majestic, unmatched glory. I am doing service to You only and none else. You bless me and see that my sins do not affect and attack me.

10.Tiruvinnagar has long and prosperous streets and is surrounded by cool gardens and tanks, full of lotus flowers. Tirumangai alwar with majestic shoulders has strung this garland of verses in praise of the Lord here. Those who recite these verses will have their sins completely washed off.

TIRUVAIMOZHI - 6 -3

Lord Narayana was playing hide and seek with Nammalwar earlier and Alwar was also sulking. Not to test the Alwar any longer, the Lord showed His exquisitely beautiful vision at Tiruvinnagar. Alwar forgot all his feigned anger and starts praising the Lord at Tiruvinnagar.

1.O lord, you are indwelling and pervading all -poverty and wealth, hell and svarga, enmity and friendship, poison and nectar. You have made me your obedient servant. I have seen and worshipped you in Tiruvinnagar, a place full of god intoxicated people.

2. Tiruvinnagar is the place surrounded by clear waters, where the lord resides eternally. He is in everything, in all mutually conflicting things like pleasure and pain, worry and peace, grace and annoyance, heat and cold. I have been able to find Him who is difficult to find, in Tiruvinnagar and he alone is my master.

3.He lords over cities and villages, intellect and ignorance, bright light and darkness and earth and sky. He resides at Tiruvinnagar of tall buildings. There is no salvation for us except through his grace and mercy.

4.The lord is every thing -sin and virtue, union and separation, memory and forgetfulness, reality and illusion. He resides in Tiruvinnagar of beautiful mansions.every thing depends upon his grace.

5.He is the embodiment of honesty and dishonesty, black and white, truth and untruth. Youth and old age, new and old. He is residing at Tiruvinnagar and his playground is all the three worlds created by him and inhabited by devas like Brahma and others.

6.He evolves into the three worlds but is not affected by their impurity. He is in all contradictory forms like love and anger, Sridevi and Moodevi, fame and blame. He is fondly worshipped by devas like Brahma Although He resides in my heart, the sinner that I am, He is unblemished and shines brightly.

7.The Lord is having a divine and is also having all the worlds, full of impurities, as His body. He is dwelling in all being s, without being seen by them. He comes in this world as Rama and Krishna and also does mischiefs at times, to help His devotees. There is no other refuge except the lotus feet of the Lord at Tiruvinnagar, who is worshipped by devas with all humility.

8.He is the supreme refuge of devas and sincere devotees and is a terror to demonical persons. To bless and be the refuge of people of southern area, He has come to Tiruvinnagar. He is my refuge, my darling, my Lord and Master.

9.The Lord Tiruvinnagar of golden mansions, is my father, mother and foster-mother. He is shining like gold, dazzling like a gem, cool and enchanting like a pearl. He is my Lord, the One without equal. He has shown His feet to me, as refuge.

10.The Lord of Tiruvinnagar, swarmed with humming bees, is the embodiment of things of shade and light, atomic and cosmic, short and long, movable and immovable, and still not affected by them. There is no other refuge, except His holy feet.

11.Nammalwar have sung thousand verses praising the Lord. Of those, the present ten verses are on the Lord at Tiruvinnagar, who grew as the gigantic Trivikrama, to the amazement of onlookers. Those who recite these verses will be respected even by nityasuris in Sri Vaikuntam.
